Tadeusz Medycki, born in 1921 in Nowe Miasto (New Town), in the Dobromil (Dobromyl) district, in the region of Lwów (Lviv), went to war on the 9th September 1939 leaving his family home behind. His wartime experiences meant that he did not return to Poland until 20 August 1947. He returned, but not to the family home, which now lay beyond Poland’s new eastern border. After finding his family – in particular his mother and siblings – he settled in Poznań, where he finished his engineering studies, started a family, and undertook professional and social work. He died in Poznań in 1993.
In Poznań, he dreamt of his old family home, because in fact, with his thoughts, and his heart, he stayed there for the rest of his life. How much he missed it, however, is best evidenced by the memoirs written down during his terminal illness during a trip to the village of Nowe Miasto (Przemyskie – Przemyśl New Town) in 1992, just before Tadeusz went into hospital. In 1939, a brave young boy left the family home to return after what only seemed a few moments, but was in fact 53 years later, a deeply emotional, grey-haired, elderly man... This is where his wanderings around the world ended.

The combination of two separate memoirs, written in close succession by Tadeusz Medycki, who was already suffering from a fatal illness, stems from the author’s wish and intention. The intention was also to show the importance of the family which shaped Tadeusz and his siblings.
